Gabriella Naseem Akhtar van Rij
In her newly published memoir, "With All My Might," Gabriella van Rij reveals the painful trials of a life continuously lived as the ‘other.’ This label was one from which she seldom escaped, being a dark-skinned Pakistani child adopted into Dutch society in the 1960’s.
Gabriella witnessed first hand how conformity can birth a lifetime of adversities. She encountered a life where concepts of identity, race, xenophobia and belonging were always problematic, however after years of searching and yearning for the impossible she came to the realization that it is ok ‘not to belong.’ By embracing her Eastern fingerprint, she proudly states that she has one leg in the West and the other one in the East. Today she dares to live in both.
Gabriella’s book is about the long journey towards self-acceptance as travelled in defiance of conformity. She encourages and enforces the message that it is only through the realization of your own uniqueness and individuality that you can then embrace the diversity of existence.
